Cat Herder’s Day

December 15, 2022

Today is a pretty fun kitty holiday: it’s Cat Herder’s Day! This may not be the biggest event on the December calendar, but it is a cute chance to honor Fluffy, and perhaps give her something extra special. An Ada, MI vet offers some information on this ‘pawspicious’ occasion below.

If you can say that your job, or even your life, is like trying to herd cats, then this day is for you, with our sympathy – Wellcat

History

National Cat Herder’s Day started back in the 80’s, with the copyrighted term claimed by Thomas and Ruth Roy. However, the idea itself goes further back. Cat herding was referred to in Monty Python’s classic comedy The Life Of Brian in 1979. By the 90’s, the term had moved into the corporate world, and appeared in several management guides. Then, in 2000, all kitties broke loose. Hewlett Packard released a Super Bowl commercial that featured a cowboy actually herding cats. We suspect that anyone involved in making that commercial probably has a few things to say about cat herding!

Behind The Meaning

The term herding cats seems like a bit of an oxymoron, doesn’t it? Fluffy is known for doing what she wants, when she wants. The term actually is a reference to those who have their hands full, often with silly or meaningless tasks. (It’s probably worth mentioning that there is no such thing as a herd of cats. A group of kitties is technically called a clowder.)

Herding Cats

As it turns out, Fluffy actually can be herded … somewhat. While telling your cat to go in a certain direction probably won’t work very well, you can trick her. Hold up a laser pointer, or toss a toy down the hall. Chances are, your furry little buddy will take off after it! There are also some tried-and-true kitty magnets that you can use. These include boxes, sunbeams, recently-vacated chairs, baskets of warm laundry and, of course, dog beds.

Carriers

On a more serious note, it is worth mentioning that it can be difficult to get Fluffy into a carrier for her appointment. Leave the carrier out, and add bedding and toys. Your pet may decide to herd herself into it!
