Pigs have become quite popular in recent years, and it really isn’t too hard to see why. They’re super cute and lots of fun, not to mention loaded with personality. However, just like other pets, they can suffer in the heat. In fact, pigs are even more susceptible than most animals. They can’t sweat, as we can, but don’t have a layer of fur to insulate them, either. A Lowell, MI vet offers some summertime pig care tips below.
You’ll need to make sure that your little buddy always has a suitable shelter to go to. You may need to install fans or misters in your pet’s outdoor home. A shade canopy may also help quite a bit. Your cute pet may be more comfortable indoors, in rooms with fans or air conditioning.
Who doesn’t enjoy a summer snack? Porky may enjoy some fruit frozen in a popsicle mold or an ice cube tray. Just stick with safe options. Ask your vet for tips.
Porky may drink twice as much water as usual when it’s hot out. Make sure there is always plenty of fresh H20 available. Drop some ice cubes into the water if you like. Your little buddy may even start bobbing for the cubes. Keep in mind that if you leave the water in the sun, it may get too hot, particularly if it’s in a metal bowl.
Not all pigs will go for this one, but you may find that your porcine pal enjoys splashing around. (This can also make for some really cute pictures.) You’ll get bonus points if your pig has a muddy spot to roll around in. This is natural and enriching behavior for Porky.
Keep an eye out for signs that your pig is getting too hot. You may notice panting, drooling, blotchy skin, open-mouthed breathing, lethargy, stiffness, dry gums, and a dull, glazed look in the eyes. Loss of appetite is another red flag. If you notice any of these things, immediately take steps to cool your little buddy down, and contact your vet.
Did you know that pigs can get sunburns? You may need to apply piggy sunscreen to your pig when it’s really hot out.
